Review on Trypanosoma cruzi: Host Cell Interaction

Figure 5

Macrophages first labeled with ferritin-ConA at 4°C, incubated with T. cruzi at 4°C, and then incubated for 30 min at 37°C, after which the cultures were fixed. The ferritin particles (arrows in (a) and (b)) associated with the membrane of vacuoles without parasites are uniformly distributed, showing a patchy distribution in those vacuoles that contain parasites. (b) High magnification of the area marked with an asterisk in (a), showing in detail the membranes of two different vacuoles. hcn, host cell nucleus; p, parasite; and pvc, parasite-containing vacuole. Bars = 1  m (after [17]).
