Tobacco and Oral Health

Call for Papers

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the US and is responsible for one in ten adult deaths worldwide. Due to steady population growth and tobacco industry marketing, global use of tobacco is growing, particularly in low- to middle-income nations where millions of people become addicted every year. Use of smokeless tobacco, cigarettes, and other smoked tobacco products, such as hookah, bidis, and kreteks, can negatively impact oral health as well as systemic health. Oral health care providers have a unique opportunity to address tobacco use and dependence in their patient populations. They have a responsibility to assess patient tobacco use, diagnose and manage tobacco-related oral and maxillofacial conditions, educate patients, and assist them with tobacco cessation. We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that seek to increase the knowledge base on the oral effects of conventional and novel tobacco product and e-cigarette use, as well as tobacco dependence education and treatment. We are interested in articles that explore effective methods for educating oral health professionals about tobacco use and dependence and increasing delivery of tobacco interventions in dental settings, as well as novel and effective tobacco interventions for dental patients. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Tobacco dependence education programs/curriculum for (oral) health professions students
  • Effects of conventional and novel tobacco products including electronic cigarettes on the oral and maxillofacial complex
  • Novel tobacco dependence treatment approaches in the dental practice setting
  • Overcoming barriers in providing tobacco dependence treatment in dental practice
  • Trends in tobacco marketing, new products, and tobacco use patterns

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Authors Guidelines which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijd/guidelines/.
