Recent Advances in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks

Call for Papers

Wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) have become a new important research area where camera-equipped sensor nodes can capture, process, and transmit image/video information. As compared to the traditional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that can only transmit the scalar information (e.g., temperature), WVSNs enable a much wider applications, such as visual security surveillance and visual wildlife monitoring. However, visual data is much bigger and more complicated than the scalar data. This makes the processing and transmission of visual information in WVSNs even more challenging than in WSNs. In addition, different views of the scene from multiple camera sensor nodes require intelligent distributed and collaborative schemes to capture/process/transmit visual data. Meeting these challenges in WVSNs requires interdisciplinary and cross-layered approaches, including visual quality-aware image/video processing, signal quality-aware communications, and power-aware networking. This raises new interesting and challenging research issues and opportunities in WVSNs.

In this special issue, we are soliciting manuscripts for novel schemes to tackle the challenging issues in WVSNs. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Sensor coverage in WVSNs
  • Visual data capturing/processing/transmission in WVSNs
  • Visual data coding and streaming in WVSNs
  • Power-aware and visual quality-aware schemes in WVSNs
  • Cross layer design in WVSNs
  • Localization and object tracking in WVSNs
  • Security and privacy issues in WVSNs
  • Visual data fusion in WVSNs
  • WVSNs testbeds and applications
