From Conventional Wireless Sensor Networks to Smart Grids

Call for Papers

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have received significant attention in the past ten years and have found a variety of applications in environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and human health monitoring, among others. Particularly, WSNs are expected to lie at the heart of the emerging generation of the power grid, known as the smart grid.

Essentially, a smart grid is an electrical grid that is characterized by its cyberphysical nature which integrates communication, computation, and control capabilities. A smart grid can be viewed in two ways: from the perspective of energy transmission and from the perspective of information transmission. In the latter, the smart grid is viewed as a sensor network gathering distributed information from suppliers and consumers. The study on smart grids from these two key perspectives is important to its successful deployment.

From an information transmission point of view, the smart grid integrates important sensing capabilities that can mimic several WSN features. These include distributed data collection within a large scale networking environment as well as accurate and robust sensing infrastructures (e.g., advanced metering infrastructures). The interplay between the power price adjustment and the end users' power usage distinguishes smart grids from conventional WSNs. New application-oriented challenges also emerge within the context of smart grids.

This strong interconnection between the smart grid and WSNs warrants significant attention from the research community. To this end, this special issue aims to gather contributions that marry concepts from WSNs and the smart grid in both theory and engineering implementation. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Applications of game theory, optimization in integrated WSNs and smart grids
  • Models and algorithms that improve the integration of sensor networks in energy grids
  • Distributed algorithms for collaborative information
  • Large-scale integration of renewable energy and virtual power plants
  • Information and communication technology for WSNs and smart grids
  • Advanced metering, data acquisition and monitoring
  • Cyber and physical security systems
  • Markets, incentives, regulation, and dynamic pricing
  • Field trials, model regions and user acceptance
  • Hardware for WSNs or smart grids
