Cooperative Communications for Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks in 2013

Call for Papers

The concept of cooperative communications for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks (WAHSNs) has recently attracted considerable attention. Being different from conventional point-to-point communications, cooperative communications allow different users or nodes in a WAHSN to share resources to create collaboration through distributed transmission, in which each user's information is sent out not only by the user but also by collaborating users. Cooperative communication is a new communication paradigm promising significant capacity and multiplexing gain in WAHSNs. It realizes a new form of spatial diversity to combat the effects of severe fading; thus, it can be used widely in WAHSNs for the sake of resource minimization. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative communication in WAHSNs are not well understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies include theoretical tools for cooperative networks, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, and new protocol design for cooperative networks. This issue tries to collect cutting-edge research achievements in this area. We solicit original and research articles for this special issue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Cooperative system architecture design for WAHSNs
  • Network capacity, outage probability, performance analysis, and optimization of WAHSNs
  • Physical layer issues for cooperative communications, such as relay assignment
  • MAC/link layer issues such as adaptive access connection and scheduling
  • Network layer issues such as resource-constrained cooperative routing
  • Transport layer issues such as multihoming transport and cooperative congestion control protocols
  • Cross-layer design in cooperative communications
  • Resource allocation and optimization for cooperative communications
  • Topology control and mobility management with cooperative communication
  • Navigation efficiency with cooperative communications
  • Coverage hole recovery with cooperation
  • Security support to complement/enhance cooperative communications
  • Evaluation mechanism of cooperative strategy
  • Simulation tools for cooperative communications
