Diabetes Mellitus
Description
Diabetes is a disorder in which the level of blood glucose is persistently raised above the normal range. It occurs either because of a lack of insulin or because of the presence of factors which oppose the action of insulin. The estimated prevalence of diabetes among adults in the United States ranges from 4.4 to 17.9 percent. However, because of the associated microvascular and macrovascular disease, diabetes accounts for almost 14 percent of US health care expenditures, at least one-half of which are related to complications such as myocardial infarction, stroke, end-stage renal disease, retinopathy, and foot ulcers.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that explore aspects in diabetes such as epidemiology, pathogenesis, acute and chronic complications, latest advances in treatment, prevention, and future therapies. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Epidemiology and etiology of diabetes
- Management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- Hypoglycemia
- Control and complications
- Cardiovascular disease in diabetes
- Diabetic neuropathies
- Evaluation of the diabetic foot
- Diabetic nephropathy
