Planktonic Growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa around a Dual-Species Biofilm Supports the Growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum within That Biofilm

Figure 5

The growth of P. aeruginosa significantly reduces the level of dissolved oxygen in broth. Fifty mL conical tubes containing 15 mL of BHI broth were inoculated with ~106 CFU of PAO1, 102 CFU of VPI 4355, or both organisms and incubated aerobically at 37°C. The level of DO2 (mg/L) was measured at 24 h after inoculation. As a control, the level of DO2 in uninoculated BHI broth was measured at time 0 for a baseline and at 24 h. Values represent the means of three independent experiments ± SEM;   ; ns, no significant change.
