Schematic model of autophagy. First of all, a double membrane structure named autophagosome surrounds the target region and creates a vesicle which separates its contents from the rest of the cytoplasm. Secondly, the vesicle is transported and fused to the lysosome, forming autophagolysosome. Lastly, the contents are degraded by lysosomal hydrolases.
