Photoinduced Disinfection of Surfaces

Call for Papers

Traditional biocidal compounds, inherently possessing a toxic effect, can have a negative impact on the aquatic environment and in some circumstances have led to the formation of biocidal resistant organisms. There is great interest in photocatalysis and photosensitised reactions to inactivate microorganisms mediated by the production of a range of indiscriminate biocidal reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS, including (but not limited to) hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide, do not possess the negative properties associated with traditional biocides and have been shown to inactivate a wide range of bacteria, yeast, fungi, and viruses. Technologies generating ROS have shown promise in a range of fields, such as sterilisation of medical devices, inactivation of pathogens on general hospital surfaces, cleaning food processing lines, disinfection of packaging materials, control of biofouling, and the preservation of historically and culturally important stone structures.

In this special issue, we invite manuscripts reporting original research and focused review articles describing developments in the field of photoinduced disinfection of surfaces. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Titanium dioxide based photocatalysis
  • Novel metal oxides and nanomaterials
  • Dye-sensitized reactions
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Advances in UVC technology
