Silsesquioxanes: Recent Advancement and Novel Applications

Description

Among polysiloxanes or silicones with the structural units of M (R3SiO1/2), D (R2SiO2/2), T (RSiO3/2), and Q (SiO4/2), those consisting mainly of T and Q units are called silicone resins. Silsesquioxanes are one class of silicone resins that consist only of the T unit. The trifunctional nature of silsesquioxanes allows for a variety of structures from oligomeric cages to ladder-like structures to three-dimensional network structures based on the ring structures. This opens up the possibility of creating unmet properties by structural control, although these materials are part of the earliest commercialized products in silicone industry.

Silicones, including silsesquioxanes, are characterized by their high thermal/photostability, electric insulation, and so forth. Compared with silica, silsesquioxanes or silicone resins have additional features including lower k, flowability, flexibility, functionality, and interaction with organic molecules from the combination of siloxane backbone and organic substitution. It is of high interest for adding specific properties from structural control of silsesquioxanes as described above.

In this special issue, we are interested in original and review articles that describe both fundamental and application researches of silsesquioxanes. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel synthetic method of oligosilsesquioxanes
  • New type of oligosilsesquioxanes
  • Ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes
  • Nanostructured polysilsesquioxanes
  • Network or new-type polysilsesquioxanes
