Active and Passive Flow Control of Turbomachines

Description

Turbomachines are used in a wide range of applications. Increasing the efficiency and operating range of turbomachinery reduce fuel consumption. Over the years, many attempts are made to achieve these objectives. The present special issue addresses these goals with special emphasis on active and passive flow control techniques.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to provide more efficient turbomachines through active and passive flow control. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Active flow control using fluid injection and blowing, single and double barrier dielectric plasma actuators, vortex generating jets, jet flaps, synthetic jets, Coanda jets, and so forth
  • Passive flow control using vortex generators on blades and casing, Gurney flaps, mini tabs, partial shrouds, casing treatment including recessed vane casing treatment, fences on endwalls and blades, dimples, grooves, riblets and roughness elements, squealer tips, and so forth
  • Passive flow control by design modifications such as axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric endwall contouring, leading edge/endwall junction modifications, blades with sweep and dihedral, tandem blades, slots, splitters, and so forth
  • Active and passive control of flow noise
