Docosahexaenoic Acid Protects Muscle Cells from Palmitate-Induced Atrophy

Lipid content of the cells incubated with either no fatty acids (Control), 0.5 mM palmitate, 0.1 mM cis-4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or 0.1mM DHA plus 0.5 mM palmitate for 96 hours and then treated with a 36% Oil red O/triethyl phosphate solution. Fluorescence was measured (excitation 485 nm, emission 530 nm) and normalized to the average protein content per treatment and expressed as arbitrary units (a.u.). *Denotes versus all other conditions.
