Recent Developments in Liposome-Based Veterinary Therapeutics
Table 1
An overview of the morphological characteristics of different types of liposomes [5].
Multilamellar vesicles
Consist of several concentric bilayers. Range in size from 500 to 5000 nm. Ideal for trapping hydrophobic drugs in additional lamellae
Large unilamellar vesicles
Consist of one concentric lipid bilayer surrounding a large inner aqueous environment. Range in size from 200 to 800 nm. Ideal for trapping large amounts of hydrophilic drugs
Small unilamellar vesicles
Consist of one concentric bilayer. Small size in the range of 100 nm. Ideal for long-term circulation.
