Variation of the macroscopic residual stresses along the three principal directions in a zircaloy-4 weld after a stress-relieving heat treatment (filled circles) and as-welded (open circles). The as-welded stresses are reduced by about 40% by the heat treatment. Measurements were taken across the plate (top) at the mid-thickness position (4.3 mm from either surface).
