Adiponectin, Leptin, and Resistin in Asthma: Basic Mechanisms through Population Studies

Schematic representation of the sexual dimorphism of the absolute concentrations of the circulating adiponectin isoforms. Compared to men, women have higher absolute concentrations of circulating total adiponectin (mean values of 11.3 versus 23.5 μg/mL) and all its isoforms [26]. When the isoforms are expressed as a proportion of the total, women have higher proportions of high (32% versus 26%) and medium molecular weight (39% versus 33%) isoforms but a lower proportion of the low molecular weight isoform (28% versus 41%) than men [26]. The figure summarizes the data published previously by Peake et al. [26] and has been reproduced with permission from Curr Med Chem [27].
