Path I: the slowest observed H+ ions are produced from the decay of superexcited HCl** into H*() + Cl, followed by nonresonant ionization of H*() by absorption of a fourth photon. The kinetic energy of the observed H+ fragment is determined in the third photon absorption step. The colour coding matches that of Figure 3.
