Multiphoton Ionization and Fragmentation of Hydrogen Chloride: A Diatomic Still Good for a Surprise

Path I: the slowest observed H+ ions are produced from the decay of superexcited HCl** into H*( ) + Cl, followed by nonresonant ionization of H*( ) by absorption of a fourth photon. The kinetic energy of the observed H+ fragment is determined in the third photon absorption step. The colour coding matches that of Figure 3.
