Structure and numbering of the imidazole 1,2,4-triazole and 1,2,3-triazole. N1 is labelled pyrrole nitrogen and N3 (imidazole) and N2/N4 (triazole) are labelled pyridine nitrogen. Note that N1 is also sp2 hybridized and the free electron pair is donated to the ring π-orbital system in order to obtain aromaticity. The lone electron pair of N3 is, however, free rendering of this nitrogen basic and the predominant site for coordination [95].
