Image and Video Quality Measurement and Assessment

Call for Papers

The advances in image and video technology has expanded image and video applications rapidly including multimedia communication, high-definition image and video coding, storage and transmission, 3D video, and distributed video applications, collectively having a big impact on human culture, economy, and society. The evaluation of image and video quality is of critical importance as it is a key determinant of customer satisfaction and a key indicator of the performance of image and video processing systems and the transmission condition of image and video signals.

With the fast developments of image and video applications, quality measurement and assessment becomes one of the most fundamental and important benchmarks to evaluate the performance of image and video systems. Given the requirement of bit-rate and computation complexity, an image and video coding system producing better quality can provide more efficient content storage and distribution. An image and video communication system providing better quality under certain transmission channel conditions can better utilize the transmission bandwidth and provide better quality of service and error concealment. As the techniques evolve, the image and video applications expand to areas including distributed video application, scalable video, 3D video applications, and synthesized videos or images applications. Quality measurement and assessment in these areas can present a clearer indication to the direction of which new techniques should be further pursued.

In recent years, many techniques including objective/subjective quality measurement metrics, human vision system and perceptual quality evaluation, and reference and nonreference quality metrics have been introduced to provide various quality measurement and assessment methods for different applications. Activities in these fields have drawn more and more attention from researchers with evermore efforts being put into it.

The goal of this special issue is to bring together the most updated research contributions in this area. We are soliciting high-quality, original, and unpublished work in image and video quality measurement and assessment. Submissions of both in-depth research papers and review papers are encouraged. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Video/image coding quality assessment and improvement
  • Objective, subjective/perceptual and reference/nonreference video/image quality assessment and metrics
  • 3D video, depth map, view interpolation-related quality evaluation and assessment
  • Distributed video coding and superresolution video/image quality evaluation assessment
  • Image and video communication and transmission quality evaluation, bitstream and syntax error and loss-related quality evaluation
  • Video/image quality evaluation/assessment for camera capture and calibration
  • Quality evaluation/assessment for synthesized videos or images

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jece/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
