Impact of Endocrine-Disrupting Environmental Contaminants on Cardiometabolic Health

Call for Papers

There is a growing public health concern on potential adverse health effects of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that are used in the manufacture of common consumer products as well as those occurring naturally. EDCs are a heterogenous group of both natural and made-made chemicals such as bisphenol a (BPA), phthalates, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and diethylstilboestrol (DES). EDCs interfere with the body's hormonal or homeostatic systems by binding to several nuclear hormone receptors including estrogen, androgen, progesterone, thyroid steroid receptors and produce a wide range of effects. Exposure during early stages of development results in adverse health effects some of which may not be evident until later in life, for example, obesity. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that seek to evaluate the association between EDC exposure and metabolic abnormalities including alteration of liver enzymes, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. We are also interested in animal studies that provide mechanistic explanation for the metabolic alterations of EDCs. Potential topics include, but not limited to:

  • Exposure to EDCs and metabolic abnormalities in adults
  • Exposure to EDCs and metabolic abnormalities in newborn/children
  • Animal studies evaluating the underlying pathogenetic mechanism of EDCs during differentiation
