Serum and Ectopic Endometrium from Women with Endometriosis Modulate Macrophage M1/M2 Polarization via the Smad2/Smad3 Pathway

Effect of serum from endometriosis patients on macrophage polarization. Flow cytometric analysis (a) showed that treatment with serum from endometriosis patients resulted in an increased percentage of CD163+ macrophages in response to LPS stimulation as compared with the control (b). The mRNA levels of CD86 (c), CD163 (d), IL-12 (e), and IL-10 (f) were detected by RT-PCR. Immunohistochemical staining analysis (g) revealed significantly increased intensity of CD163 staining in macrophages treated with serum from endometriosis patients compared with that in controls (h).
