Critical pressure 𝑝_𝑐 for cross-sectional deformation of embedded carbon nanotubes. Monotonic increases with 𝑟_𝑚/𝑟_𝑁, the ratio between the radii of the medium (𝑟_𝑚) and the outermost tube (𝑟_𝑁), are observed regardless of the Young’s modulus ratio 𝐸_𝑚/𝐸 between the elastic medium (𝐸_𝑚) and the carbon nanotubes (𝐸): 𝐸_𝑚/𝐸=10⁻³ (dashed curves), 𝐸_𝑚/𝐸=10⁻² (dash-dotted curves), and 𝐸_𝑚/𝐸=10⁻¹ (solid curve).
