On each of the core-level spectra, the top (black) curve is taken from the SERS-active area and the bottom (red) curve is from the non-SERS-active flat Au surface. The molecule shown in (a) is that of TETS and the thiolated portion of a β-CD molecule is shown in (d). The arrows indicate the functional groups that are responsible for the observed XPS core-level peaks.
