Schematic of combination therapy of radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Ionizing radiation is used to excite scintillating nanoparticles, which may be located deep within tissue. The nanoparticles transfer energy to the attached photosensitizer molecules, killing cells by the same mechanism as photodynamic therapy.
