Low-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials 2013

Call for Papers

The 2010 Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of graphene completes a trifecta of mega-awards to three different members in the family of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, together with the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry (for the discovery of fullerenes) and the 2008 Kavli Prize in nanoscience (for the discovery of carbon nanotubes). The surge of scientific and technological interests in graphene once again surprises us with the huge potential of the seemingly simple carbon family nanomaterials. The last two decades have seen the emerging and thriving of carbon-based nanoscience and nanotechnology, which have been evolved into a truly interdisciplinary field, encompassing chemistry, physics, materials science, and mechanics. On one hand, the unique properties of the low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials keep inspiring more diverse applications; on the other hand, the tremendous research efforts on graphene in the past several years also enable the scientific exploration into unconventional low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, for example, the topologically open carbon nanoscrolls.

Aiming to offer a focal publishing venue for this ever thriving field of research and following the success of the 2010 special issue on “Low-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, and Application,” Journal of Nanomaterials has decided, for the first time since its launch, to establish an annual/special issue on low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. This annual/special issue series will focus on the fundamental physics, synthesis, and technical applications of low-dimensional carbon materials (buckyballs, nanodiamond, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon nanoscrolls, and other novel carbon nanostructures). Correspondingly, we intend to solicit research and review papers that cover a wide range of recent progress on the studies of low-dimensional carbon materials, including their mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties, the roles of defects and morphology in their materials properties, their fabrications and large-scale patterning, their interactions with other materials, and their mechanical, electrical, and biomedical applications. Papers detailing theoretical, computational, or experimental studies are equally welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Synthesis and fabrication
  • Modeling and/or measurement of material properties
  • Defects in low-dimensional carbon
  • Morphology, structure, and their correlation with material properties
  • Mechanical, thermal, electrical, biological, and biomedical applications
