Within the main group of measurements (encircled), there is general reduction in plasma cholesterol compared to preoperative value, with low-normal triglycerides. A: measurement with the lowest cholesterol and highest triglyceride levels, without fat infusion, signalling the transition of a septic patient to preterminal illness and shock. B: measurements with less severe hypertriglyceridemia signalling transient but reversible worsening of septic illness in two patients undergoing fat infusion.
