Angiogenesis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Opportunities for Novel Therapies

Figure 2

Endothelial Cells Protect Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells from Chemotherapy. Human acute promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL60) were cultured in two conditions: over plastic and in the presence of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The leukemia cells were then exposed to cytarabine chemotherapy, which is commonly administered to patients with AML. Cell proliferation was subsequently measured by XTT assay. HL60 cells in coculture with HUVECs showed no decrease in cell proliferation after chemotherapy exposure (NS) as compared to HL60 cells cultured over plastic ( 𝑃 < 0 . 0 5 ).
