Anemia and Iron Deficiency in Pregnancy
Description
Iron deficiency is still the world's most common nutritional deficiency and especially, but not only, affects women of childbearing age and pregnant women. There exist different food fortification programmes, supplementation guidelines, and therapy schemes. But still, the problem seems unsolved in most parts of the world. Even in industrialized countries, the topic of iron and pregnancy often stays unattended. Therefore, iron deficiency serves as the main reason for anemia in pregnancy and postpartum. Other disorders, such as hemoglobinopathies, also contribute to the high prevalence of anemia worldwide. The prevalence of anemia is further influenced by a variety of deficiencies (e.g., vitamin B 12, zinc, and folic acid), infectious diseases, and malnutrition. Not only anemia endangers the mothers, but also iron deficiency may play an important role in the further development of their children.
We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that will stimulate efforts to understand and fight anemia in pregnancy, postpartum, and women of childbearing age. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Iron deficiency with and without anemia in women of reproductive age and pregnancy
- Food fortification with iron
- Iron supplementation as a preventional measure
- Oral and i.v. iron therapy
- Avoidance of blood transfusions
- Hemoglobinopathies and pregnancy
- Nutritional deficiencies other than iron deficiency
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jp/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
