In Vitro and In Vivo Antimalarial Activity Assays of Seeds from Balanites aegyptiaca: Compounds of the Extract Show Growth Inhibition and Activity against Plasmodial Aminopeptidase

Figure 5

In vitro inhibition and dose-response curves of chloroquine-susceptible P. falciparum strain NF54. Parasitemias determined after inhibition with (a) 100  M 2,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol, (c) 100  M 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol, and (e) a combination of both compounds with 100  M each. Triangles indicate parasitemias of the untreated NF54 control while rectangles indicate the drug-treated strain. Each point represents the mean value of four different countings with ± standard deviations. Dose-response curves were obtained after inhibition with the compounds in the range of 10  M–100  M and IC50 values were determined. (b) 2,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol, determined IC50 = 50.29  M ± 3, and (d) 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol, determined IC50 = 47.82  M ± 2,5, and (f) a combination of both compounds determined IC50 = 42.5  M ± 3.
