Principle of biosensor construction. Typically a biosensor device consists of a sensitive biomolecular layer (grafted polymers, supported membranes, bioreceptors, nucleic acids, enzymes or antibodies) immobilized onto the surface of solid substrate (transducer) that can measure the output signal (e.g., electrical catalytic current in enzyme-based biosensors, mass changes in acoustical piezoelectric resonators, etc.).
