Thyroid Function and Dysfunction in the Fetus, Neonate, and Infant
Call for Papers
Thyroid issues in infancy encompass the spectrum from hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism and require special consideration for the unique physiology of the newborn. Our understanding of prenatal thyroid development and early postnatal thyroid function continues to advance thanks to new research techniques, including molecular genetics. Yet many questions remain regarding what is truly “normal,” particularly for those infants born prematurely or with medical conditions causing significant illness in the neonatal period. In addition, the optimal treatment of congenital thyroid disorders, such as permanent congenital hypothyroidism and neonatal Graves’ disease, continues to be debated as one strives to promote normal growth and development in the setting of abnormal thyroid function.
We invite authors to submit original research or review articles addressing thyroid function and dysfunction in infancy. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- The influence of maternal thyroid status on fetal and neonatal thyroid function
- Genetic determinants of thyroid embryogenesis and early thyroid function
- Identification of thyroid abnormalities in utero and considerations for in utero treatment
- Assessment of thyroid function in the preterm infant: distinguishing abnormal from normal
- Diagnosis and optimal treatment of congenital hypothyroidism
- Diagnosis and management of neonatal Graves’ disease
- Effect of iodine insufficiency and iodine excess on prenatal and neonatal thyroid functions
- Thyroid function in infants with Down syndrome: what is normal and when is treatment indicated
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jtr/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/jtr/tfdi/ according to the following timetable:
| Manuscript Due | Friday, 2 August 2013 |
| First Round of Reviews | Friday, 25 October 2013 |
| Publication Date | Friday, 20 December 2013 |
