The steps during the bacteriophage lytic and lysogenic life cycles. The well-known bacteriophage Lambda has a choice between both cycles. Some phages are exclusively virulent, never entering the lytic cycle. Others are long-term residents of the bacterial host chromosome and in some cases may have lost the ability to excise and enter the lytic cycle.
