Protein Methylation and Stress Granules: Posttranslational Remodeler or Innocent Bystander?

FRAP shows the dynamic exchange of FMRP between stress granules and the cytosol. (a) A representative HeLa cell treated with 1.0 mM sodium arsenite and expressing an EGFP-tagged form of the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) was imaged by confocal microscopy. The region of interest (ROI) in the yellow box was photobleached to 30% of its initial intensity at time 0. The recovery of EGFP-FMRP fluorescence over the next 330 seconds within the ROI is shown in the sequentially numbered panels. A similar sized ROI shown in red that was not photobleached was quantified similarly. (b) The graph shows the fluorescence intensities in both panels as a function of time. The results were adapted from Dolzhanskaya et al. [27, Figure  9] and Dolzhanskaya et al. [20, Figure  7].
