Regulation and Prognostic Relevance of Symmetric Dimethylarginine Serum Concentrations in Critical Illness and Sepsis

Figure 1

Serum SDMA concentrations in critically ill patients. (a) At admission to the medical ICU, serum SDMA levels were significantly ( , test) elevated in critically ill patients ( ) as compared to healthy controls ( ). (b) SDMA serum levels at ICU admission were significantly increased in ICU patients with sepsis ( ) compared to patients without sepsis ( ). (c) SDMA serum levels at ICU admission were significantly increased in ICU patients with higher degree of disease severity, as displayed by the APACHE-II score. (d) In 42 patients, SDMA levels were measured at admission (day 1) and at 1 week (day 7) of ICU therapy. SDMA levels remained stable during the first week of ICU treatment (paired Wilcoxon test).
