Long-term filtration causes erythrocyte injury and neutrophil elastase release. Groups were divided as those in Figure 1 ( in each group). Hemoglobin levels were similar in all groups during experiments (a). Both of free hemoglobin (b) and neutrophil elastase (c) levels were higher in Group L than in Groups C and S after 30 min of ECC. Free hemoglobin level was also higher in Group C than in Group S. * and ** versus control; and # and ## versus Group L.
