Viability of SFB was monitored using an MTS assay as shown in (a). While viability did not change over time in the presence of CHDR, a gradual decrease was observed during the incubation period in the absence of CHDR. (b) shows the correlating Giemsa staining for SFB cultures on cover slides confirming the MTS data. Scale bar 50 μm. The results of the MTS assay for CHDR in alginate beads are shown in (c). Metabolic activity slightly decreased from day 7 and was enhanced by adding LPS and PMA.
