Inverse Problems in Structural Engineering

Description

When it is possible to determine governing equation(s), shape(s) and size(s) of the domain(s), boundary and initial conditions, material properties of the media contained in structural engineering, and internal sources and external forces or inputs, then the analysis determining the unknown field is considered mathematically or numerically solvable.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand various inverse problems in structural engineering. We are particularly interested in articles describing the new conceptual ideas and methods for the practical solution of applied inverse problems. We aim to address the needs of practicing engineers, mathematicians, and researchers and to serve as a focal point for the quick communication of ideas.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Shape design: determination of shape, size, and location of domains in structures
  • Material properties: determination of physical properties of structures
  • Forces and sources: determination of the unknown external forces or inputs acting on a structure
  • Governing equations: inference of analytic forms of partial and/or integral equations governing the variation of measured field quantities
  • Information theory related to parameter uncertainty and model section related to structural engineering
