The nomenclature of the gangliosides indicates whether they are mono-, di-, tri-, or tetrasialogangliosides (GM, GD, GT, and GQ, resp.), their order of migration on thin-layer chromatograph (e.g., GM3 migrates further than GM1), and variations in basic structure (e.g., GD1a versus GD1b). GalC: galactocerebroside; Glc: glucose; Gal: galactose; GalNAc: N-acetylgalactosamine; NeuAc: N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid).
