Mate Tea Prevents Oxidative Stress in the Blood and Hippocampus of Rats with Acute or Chronic Ethanol Administration

Effects of acute administration of ethanol, mate tea, and mate tea plus ethanol on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBA-RSs) (a), on catalase (b) and superoxide dismutase (c) activities in rat hippocampus. Data are mean ± SD for 5 independent experiments (animals) performed in duplicate. ; compared to control group (Duncan multiple-range test). One catalase (CAT) unit is defined as 1 μmol of H2O2 consumed per minute. One superoxide dismutase (SOD) unit is defined as the amount of SOD necessary to inhibit 50% of pyrogallol autoxidation.
