Oxidative Stress in Chronic Kidney Disease

Description

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with cardiovascular disease, muscle wasting, malnutrition, and chronic inflammation. In chronic kidney disease, oxidative stress occurs frequently and has been proposed as a central mechanism in the pathogenesis of CKD progression and CKD associated complications and mortality. There is a multitude of recently described relations between oxidative stress and molecular changes in CKD, as reduction of alpha-klotho, impaired vitamin-D signaling, and posttranslational protein modifications. It is a current challenge to determine for the particular prooxidant or antioxidant constituent which amount is adaptive, protective, or damaging at a certain disease state. Also, there is a definite need to determine which therapeutic interventions, which interfere with oxidant or antioxidant processes, result in a clinically detectable improvement in patients with CKD.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles to advance our understanding about the role of oxidative stress in CKD. We are especially interested in results from controlled trials measuring clinical outcomes of antioxidant treatment and/or analyzing molecular changes that occur during treatment with antioxidant substances in CKD. We also encourage investigators to contribute their results about associations of the clinical outcome of patients with CKD and biomarkers of oxidative stress. Also, we invite authors to present their results from animal or cell models which help to understand how changes of a particular oxidant or antioxidant constituent in CKD result in damaging or protective effects.

  • Clinical trials with antioxidant substances in CKD
  • Strategies to decrease the oxidative stress burden in CKD
  • Oxidative stress biomarker research in CKD
  • Molecular investigations of the effects of oxidative stress in CKD
  • Posttranslational protein modifications related to oxidative stress in CKD
  • Molecular investigations of the effects of antioxidant therapies in CKD
