Oxidative Stress in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Ageing

Description

Oxidative stress can be characterized by an excessive increase in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although several important biological functions have been attributed to ROS, harmful effects can take place when high levels of these reactive molecules are encountered in cells. Counteracting the toxic side effect of ROS, antioxidant defense systems have been evolved in cells to eliminate or repair oxidatively damaged macromolecules. The complex balance between ROS generation and detoxification is dependent on an intricate process named redox regulation. In addition, oxidative stress has been pointed out as either a cause or a consequence of several diseases such as cancer, metal induced diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and ageing. Thus, the knowledge and understanding of the mechanism by which oxidative stress triggers such disorders is the focus of modern life sciences.

We, therefore, invite authors to contribute with high-quality original research as well as review articles that will explore the relationship between oxidative stress, neurodegenerative disorders, and ageing. We are interested in articles focusing on the exploring mechanisms of ROS generation, responsive genes and signaling pathways, detection of new oxidative stress biomarkers associated with neuron degeneration and ageing, current concepts in the treatment of the oxidative stress as well as neurodegeneration, new insights into neurodegenerative diseases using different experimental models, advances in molecular diagnostics associated with neurodegeneration. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Recent developments in the research of oxidative stress related to neurodegenerative diseases and ageing
  • New biological models for studies on the oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases, and ageing
  • Understanding oxidative stress emergence
  • Advances in genetics and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and ageing
  • Identification of the new factors involved in oxidative stress response and neurodegenerative diseases
  • Focus on the novel oxidative biomarkers of ROS-induced cell damage and toxicity in neurodegenerative diseases and ageing
  • Recent advances in redox regulation of gene expression
  • Current strategies to reduce the development of the oxidative stress in neurodegeneration and ageing

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/oximed/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
