Neuroprotection in Neurodegenerative Disease: From Basic Science to Clinical Applications

Description

Neurodegeneration is a multifactorial and complex process, and several mechanisms have been pointed to be involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, such as increased oxidative/nitrosative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, apoptosis, protein misfolding/aggregation, and glutamatergic excitotoxicity. Thus, we seek to explore, based on basic and clinical studies, novel neuroprotective mechanisms focused on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and glutamate receptor antagonists, modulation of neurotrophic factors, and others.

We cordially invite authors to submit original research and review articles to elucidate the knowledge from basic science to clinical applications of molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuroprotection associating the role of oxidative, immune, and inflammatory responses from neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, the ultimate goal of these papers is to understand potential therapeutic targets and preventive strategies focusing on neurodegenerative diseases.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Major neurodegenerative diseases: aetiologies and pathologies, roles of oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Novel therapeutic interventions: immune, inflammatory, and antioxidant aspects of neurodegenerative diseases; influence of the blood-brain barrier in drug penetration
  • Neuroprotection strategies: molecular and cellular mechanisms; importance of oxidative stress relative to other mechanisms
  • Other therapeutic neuroprotective strategies: epigenetic processes, impact of natural products, pre- and postconditioning, and role of maladaptive neural responses; role of the blood-brain barrier
  • In vitro and in vivo models of CNS neuroprotection, relevance to human
  • Clinical trials of neuroprotective initiatives; importance of oxidative stress in disease alleviation
