A Minireview of the Natures of Radiation-Induced Point Defects in Pure and Doped Silica Glasses and Their Visible/Near-IR Absorption Bands, with Emphasis on Self-Trapped Holes and How They Can Be Controlled

Models for self-trapped holes in silica-based glasses: (a) STH1 and (b) STH2. These structures were deduced experimentally on the basis of a highly detailed ESR study [15] involving both g-value distributions and 29Si hyperfine splittings (and theories thereof) and have since been successfully calculated by ab intio methods, for example, [35, 36]. Here, the shaded “balloons” represent the orbitals of the unpaired electron spins (denoted by vertical arrows).
