Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Diseases

Description

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder in which there are recurrent episodes of collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep, causing repetitive arousals from sleep and episodes of hypoxia. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that OSA is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality. Moreover, OSA has been associated with many cardiovascular diseases like systemic hypertension, arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, coronary disease, and stroke. In the same way, central sleep apnea (CSA) and Cheyne-Stokes respiration had also been related with heart failure. Proposed mechanisms behind this association included increased sympathetic activity, proinflammatory activity, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulation alterations. Different treatment strategies for OSA, like using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral appliances. or surgery, have showed their efficacy to abolish the apneas and to improve the health-related quality of life of these patients. However, information about the effect of the OSA treatment, mainly of the CPAP, on the development of cardiovascular complications is still limited and it is necessary to increase its evidence level. Even, there are some studies that have reported the possible efficacy of adaptive servo-ventilation in the treatment of CSA.

The main focus of this special issue will be on the association of OSA and CSA with cardiovascular diseases. We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that lead to a better understanding of this association. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Potential mechanisms linking OSA to cardiovascular disease
  • Acute cardiovascular effects of OSA
  • OSA-related cardiovascular diseases
  • Impact of OSA on natural history of cardiovascular diseases
  • Cardiovascular effects of CPAP treatment
  • Therapeutic cardiovascular efficacy of emerging treatment for OSA
  • CSA and cardiovascular disease

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/pm/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/pm/sacd/ according to the following timetable:
