Bark Beetles, Pityogenes bidentatus, Orienting to Aggregation Pheromone Avoid Conifer Monoterpene Odors When Flying but Not When Walking

Selected comparisons from three studies (Byers et al. [7], El-Sayed and Byers [9], and Byers et al. [8]) showing reduced catches of flying Pityogenes bidentatus on traps releasing pheromone plus inhibitor volatiles (monoterpenes released at 1 mg/day, 100–200 g bark or needles of spruce and pine) compared to control traps with pheromone alone (Sjöbo/Veberöd, Sweden, April-May 1998–2000, see Methods for details). Total catches of both sexes with asterisks were significantly lower than the pheromone controls in the same test at (chi-square goodness of fit).
