Stem Cell Niche Dynamics: From Homeostasis to Carcinogenesis

Figure 3

Model of the breast stem cell niche including structural elements (left panel) and mathematical model (right panel). Key populations of the mammary stem cell niche include mammary stem cells (MSCs), mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial stem cells (ESCs), bipotent progenitor (BPP), luminal progenitor (LP), myoepithelial progenitor (MEP), myoepithelial cells (MCs), luminal epithelial cells (LCs), and stromal cells. Wnt, Notch, and Hedgehog (Hh) signaling play a role in MSC self-renewal. Regulatory signals from growth factors (GFs) secreted by fibroblasts and CCL signaling from mesenchymal stem cells also regulate MSC fate.
