Figure 1

Summary of active (nonrecruiting) clinical trials using stem cell sources internationally. The search was performed on the website of ClinicalTrials.gov (https://clinicaltrials.gov/) on July 28, 2015, and results show there are 117 active studies (a) with 11 studies currently in Phase III or Phase IV clinical trials. Keywords included “Bone marrow derived stem cells” (), “Adipose derived stem cells” (), “Dental pulp stem cells” (), “Neural stem cells” (), “Skin derived stem cells” (), “Epithelial derived stem cells” (), “Umbilical cord blood stem cells” (), “Embryonic stem cells” (), and “Induced pluripotent stem cells” (). With regard to the Phase III and Phase IV trials (b) umbilical cord blood stem cells are the most common stem cells sources () followed by adipose derived stem cells (), neural stem cells (), and epithelial stem cells ().
