Mathematically equivalent models. (a) Jansen et al. [8] are physiologically accurate with one PSP block for each input into a neuronal subgroup. The same approach was used in Wendling et al. but contradicts the equations. (b) The structure was changed in Jansen and Rit [9] such that two neuronal subgroups share a common PSP block. Cell groups: pyramidal cells (solid lines), excitatory interneurons (dotted lines), and inhibitory interneurons (dashed lines). The EPSP block is shown with dash-dotted lines to indicate that it corresponds to both the excitatory and inhibitory EPSP blocks in (a).
