Nuclear Activities in Argentina, 2010

Description

Nuclear activities in Argentina restarted. After almost two decades of near stagnation, the Government political decision (August 2006) regarding electrical energy production considered the nuclear option as a valid one to solve the problems of the growing demand of electrical energy. This decision triggered again the activities related to the finalization of the third nuclear power reactor (Atucha II), now actively progressing, the construction of a prototype of the CAREM integral advanced reactor, and the studies for the emplacement of a fourth Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in an appropriate site. In all those years of near stagnation, there was a notable exception, related to the design and construction of experimental and radioisotope production reactors, leaded by INVAP, a state-owned industry, which exported its production. The accompanying industries of nuclear fuel elements production also remained active, given the demand of the two active NPPs.

The aforementioned activities imply the ones related to a number of key issues like fundamental studies, design and plant engineering, radiological and nuclear safety, economics, safeguards, regulation, environmental aspects, public acceptance, and so forth that must be addressed.

In view of the above, it has been decided to bring out a special issue on “Nuclear activities in Argentina, 2010”, aimed at documenting the present scientific and technical status and recent advances in relation to the subject. This special issue will be organized in two sections, one devoted to a few, invited, overview papers and another, not limited in number, consisting in scientific and technical contributions. All papers will be subject to the usual reviewing procedure.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Fundamental studies in nuclear energy
  • Radiological and nuclear safety analysis
  • Novel concepts in nuclear energy production
  • Experimental reactors engineering and design
  • Regulatory aspects in nuclear activities
  • Environmental control related to nuclear activity

Papers are invited from experts working in areas mentioned above for publication in the special issue.

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/stni/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
