Mechanism for the formation of metabolites by oxidative pyrrole ring cleavage of melatonin forming a primary metabolite AFMK. The secondary metabolite AMK has potent radical scavenging properties as compared to AFMK, formed during the oxidation of melatonin by hydroxyl radicals () as a result of pyrrole ring cleavage.
