Intussusceptive angiogenesis. Two opposite endothelial cell membranes make contact (“kissing” contact) and interendothelial junctions develop at their edge. Connective tissue columns, called tissue pillars, grow into the lumen between the endothelial contact, resulting in partitioning of the vessel lumen (from [28]; modified).
